Architecture interests me because it shapes what daily life is like and it is designed to not be thought about. In 2016 I had the amazing opportunity to go to China for 3 months. The density and scale of the traffic, population, and architecture of Shanghai was overwhelming. I loved the fast-paced, organized chaos of China and the constant stream of people during the day in every city we went to, but I also couldn’t understand how so much building could be sustainable. I was also surprised by the newness of everything. Unless it was a museum or other protected building, basically everything was built after 1900. Trying to understand China, finding answers to the questions I have about it, and unpacking my experiences from visiting there is what I am focusing on in my work now.
